Our Story

Dr. Peninah Njeri Kaniu was born and raised in Kagaa, Kenya, during colonial rule, and was a preteen when Kenya gained independence in 1963. Her father was a doctor who worked in Nairobi, educated at one of the only schools in the country open to Kenyan children at the time, a place you had to be selected to attend. Her mother managed the family's tea farm back home in Kagaa and worked as a midwife in the community.

In the 1970s, Dr. Kaniu left for the United States, where the doors to higher education were open in a way they weren't back home. She earned her Master of Public Health from San José State University and her Doctor of Education from the University of San Francisco. She never lost sight of home.

In 2008, she founded AYHEM, starting with a single community library in Kagaa, a place where kids could read, learn, and dream past their circumstances. Today, we're building on that same foundation with a new tech center in the works, giving this generation the tools to compete anywhere in the world.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

We support youth and families through access to health education, preventive care, and community wellness initiatives. With partner collaboration, we promote holistic well-being so children and youth can grow strong, healthy, and resilient.

TECHNOLOGY ACCESS

We bridge the digital divide by creating safe, sustainable spaces for learning through computer labs and digital literacy training. By providing access to technology, we prepare youth for the modern workforce and open doors to new opportunities.

EDUCATION

Education is at the heart of what we do. From building libraries to expanding learning opportunities, we empower underserved youth with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in school and in life. With the support of our partners, we are shaping brighter futures.
