Who we are

African Youth Health Education Magnet is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering underserved youth in African village communities through education, health, and community development. Founded in 2008 by Dr. Peninah Njeri Kaniu, our mission is to increase access to knowledge, technology, and opportunity.

We began by building a community library in Kagaa, Kenya, creating a space where children could read, learn, and dream beyond their circumstances. Today, we are expanding that vision with a computer lab, bridging the digital divide and opening new pathways for youth to thrive.

Rooted in compassion, education, and community, we believe that when youth are given the tools to succeed, they not only transform their own futures — they uplift entire generations.

African Youth Health Education Magnet Solutions is led by a dedicated team of educators, organizers, and community leaders. Together, we blend lived experience, academic expertise, and a passion for service to make education and health resources accessible in underserved African communities.


  • Founder


    Dr. Peninah Njeri Kaniu founded African Youth Health Education Magnet Solutions to give back to the village that raised her. Born and raised in Kagaa, Kenya, she was one of eleven children and the daughter of a tea farmer and midwife. Encouraged by her family to pursue education, she later earned her Master of Public Health from San José State University and her Doctor of Education (EdD) from the University of San Francisco. With decades of experience in technology, education, and community health, Dr. Kaniu continues to build bridges between global partners and local youth to create sustainable opportunities for the next generation.


  • Chief Executive Officer

    Josephine Mwaniki is the CEO of African Youth Health Education Magnet Solutions (AYHEM), where she drives the organization’s vision to reimagine education and health access for African youth. With a background in sociology and community engagement, and as a current Master of Divinity candidate, Josephine blends strategic leadership with values-driven service.

    Under her leadership, AYHEM is expanding its impact through projects like the Kagaa Community Computer Lab and the remodeling of the Kagaa Village Health Center, building a future where technology, health, and education empower the next generation to thrive.

In this work, Dr. Kaniu outlines a framework for advancing health equity in village communities through culturally congruent education systems. Her research identifies structural limitations within conventional curricula that fail to reflect African norms, traditions, and lived realities—contributing to persistent gaps in health literacy and prevention outcomes.

The book advances a community inquiry model rooted in participation, dialogue, and collective agency. Health transformation, in this framework, is not externally imposed. It is cultivated through local ownership, shared responsibility, and culturally grounded knowledge exchange.

This strategic approach underpins the Village Health Centre restoration. The objective is not only to modernize a 50-year-old facility, but to integrate infrastructure renewal with sustainable health education and community capacity building. By aligning physical upgrades with culturally responsive health systems, the initiative advances long-term equity, resilience, and intergenerational wellbeing.
